San Francisco is fully closing the Golden Gate Bridge on Saturday for America’s 250th anniversary fireworks

Visitors planning to explore San Francisco this Independence Day weekend should note major traffic changes as the Golden Gate Bridge prepares for a fireworks display celebrating the 250th anniversary of the United States.

The celebration, taking place on Saturday, July 4, 2026, will feature one of the most unique fireworks shows ever seen in the city. Fireworks will be launched directly from the eastern side of the Golden Gate Bridge, with additional displays from two barges in San Francisco Bay—one beneath the bridge and another near PIER 39.

Because of the event, the Golden Gate Bridge will be completely closed to vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians between 9:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. Highway restrictions and traffic diversions will begin earlier, starting at 8:00 p.m., and the bridge will reopen to vehicle traffic and cyclists using the west sidewalk at approximately 10:00 p.m.

A Rare Fireworks Display from the Golden Gate Bridge

Although the Golden Gate Bridge has stood for more than nine decades, fireworks have only been launched from the landmark on two previous occasions. The first celebration marked the bridge's 50th anniversary in 1987, and the second took place in 2012 during its 75th anniversary. This year's event will be only the third time in the bridge's history that fireworks have been launched directly from the structure, making it a memorable part of the nation's semiquincentennial celebrations.

The fireworks are scheduled to begin at 9:30 p.m., offering residents and visitors an unforgettable evening along San Francisco's waterfront.

Best Places to Watch the Show

Those hoping to enjoy the display will find excellent viewing opportunities at several popular locations, including:

Crissy Field

Marina Green

PIER 39

The northern Embarcadero

The Main Lawn at the Presidio

Arriving early is recommended, as these areas are expected to attract large crowds.

Road Closures and Traffic Detours

To ensure the event is conducted safely, transportation officials will temporarily shut down U.S. Highway 101 in both directions between 8:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. The Golden Gate Bridge itself will reopen to vehicle traffic and cyclists using the west sidewalk at approximately 10:00 p.m.

The following access points will be closed during the event:

Northbound U.S. 101 off-ramp at Lincoln Boulevard in San Francisco

Southbound U.S. 101 off-ramp at Spencer Avenue in Marin County

Northbound U.S. 101 on- and off-ramps at Girard Street

Northbound U.S. 101/State Route 1 interchange off-ramp

State Route 1 off-ramp at Lake Street

Drivers traveling between San Francisco and Marin County should expect significant delays and follow the official detour routes.

Northbound (San Francisco to Marin)

Motorists should cross the Bay Bridge via Interstate 80 East, connect to Interstate 580 West, travel over the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge, and then rejoin U.S. 101.

Southbound (Marin to San Francisco)

Drivers heading toward San Francisco should take Interstate 580 East across the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge before continuing onto Interstate 80 West over the Bay Bridge to reconnect with U.S. 101.

Officials strongly recommend using public transportation whenever possible to avoid heavy congestion before and after the fireworks display.

Pedestrian and Bicycle Access

Both sidewalks on the Golden Gate Bridge will be unavailable to pedestrians and cyclists from 8:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. on Saturday evening.

Cyclists will be able to use the west sidewalk again once the bridge reopens at 10:00 p.m., while pedestrian access will return to its normal schedule on Sunday, July 5. In addition, the east sidewalk will have limited access from 5:00 a.m. on Friday, July 3, until 5:00 a.m. on Sunday, July 5, when pedestrians and cyclists will only be allowed to travel as far as each bridge tower before turning back.
